Serenity, Reflection and Timelessness
The table ”The Parliament of Nature” with 21 matching chairs
Present at COP15 – United Nations Climate Change Conference, at Bella Center, Copenhagen 2009
At the Bella Center, the conference table is placed at an important position between the conference rooms of the Danish Prime Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen and UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. In March 2010, the table will be sold at an international auction by the Auction House
Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen. The proceeds from the table will be invested in setting up an international school for sustainable employment of wood and wood products. The domicile will be based in the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. After COP-15 and before the auction in March, the table and chairs will be showed at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in February 2010.
The Danish artist-craftsman and designer Tyge Axel Holm has spent more than two years making this truly impressive maple table measuring 5.5 metres in diameter. In the tabletop he has cut 1,597 holes and filled them with reddish, purpleheart wood. These dots form a pattern modelled on the so-called Fibonaccci sequence (0+1=1, 1+1=2, 1+2=3, 2+3=5, 3+5=8 etc.). The Fibonacci sequence is a universal representation of population growth. The sequence recurs throughout nature, in snail shells and in the patterns of sunflower seeds. And it is also closely related to the ’golden ratio’ in art. The table is made from Danish maple and Brazilian purpleheart wood.
Tyge Axel Holm is extremely concerned with environmental issues and demands the utmost of his craftsmanship, not only aesthetically and functionally, but also as far as sustainability is concerned. Says Holm, ”It was my dream that the table could be used at COP15, symbolizing the importance of an agreement on the climate”.
As long as he can remember, Tyge Axel Holm has been fascinated by wood. It is an organic material, which is in continuous movement and which can be used for so many things: buildings, sculptures, paper... And in addition it is a completely energy neutral and sustainable material.
The works of Tyge Axel Holm radiate serenity, reflection and timelessness. Through his work Tyge Axel Holm insists that aestetics, quality and function can be combined.
Tyge Axel Holm lives and works in Bornholm. A beautiful Danish island in the Baltic Sea. He is a member of ACAB (Arts & Crafts Association Bornholm) and the Danish Arts and Crafts Association.

“We have chosen the right artists”, says the Director of the Museum

This weekend The Board for Art Craft and Design of the States Art Foundation visited the present exhibition at the Art Museum at Bornholm, The Parliament of Nature. The board was thrilled with the exhibition and decided to give an award for two of the works at the exhibition, namely one fantastic bowl made by Tyge Axel Holm and one significant photo of Bornholm taken by Rene Dupont.
Only very few people achieve an award by the States Art Foundation. Last year approximately 30 artists were chosen to receive an award and they were selected amongst several hundreds of exhibit
ions and artists throughout the whole country. Apart from the honour of being awarded, the artists also receive a cash payment. Lars Kærulf Møller, the Director of Museum is very pleased on behalf of the museum, and especially on behalf of the artists.
The Art Museum in Bornholm is the setting for my next exhibition. Along with fashion photographer Rene Dupont I will present my exhibition of newer and older works in the two main exhibition halls in the museum. Rene Dupont has taken the photos for the exhibition catalogue and will at the same time also show 8 large photos of Bornholm.
At the exhibition I will present my largest work to date: The Parliament of Nature. A large conference table made of marble seating 21 persons. The table top is decorated with the beautiful Fibonacci pattern with more than 1500 points of the wood sort “Amarant”. Furthermore, I will also present a large number of works, furniture and jewellery. The exhibition will take place from the 22nd of June until the 31st August 2008.
